Simmer List

About Simmer List

Good food, no guesswork. Simmer List maps where to eat vegan, city by city, and keeps a diary of what you ate and where.

What it is

Two halves of one thing. The public half is a set of city guides: 49,223 places across 269 cities, 3,771 of them kitchens where the entire menu is yours, cut by the kind of food you want and how you want to eat it. You can read all of it without an account.

The other half is the app, where the places you have been become a diary. Log a meal, rate the dish, keep a list for a trip, share it with whoever you are travelling with. It is the part that turns a directory into a record of your own eating.

Where the listings come from

Nearly every venue was recorded by a local mapper in public map data, and a small remainder we inferred from a venue’s own listing. No page here claims a Simmer List member has eaten somewhere unless one actually has. How we know a place serves vegan food sets all of that out, including what a status does not tell you.

How it pays for itself

It does not, yet, and nothing on it is for sale. There is no paid placement, no sponsored listing, no affiliate link and no way for a restaurant to buy a position in a guide. The app is free. The project is open source, under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and the venue data it is built on is openly licensed too, which is why the footer credits it on every page.

How we write about food

Food gets described by what it is. A smash burger is a smash burger and a pistachio gelato is a pistachio gelato, never a version of something else with a part taken out. You will not find lectures here either: this is about where to have a very good dinner.
